Millville, N.J. (May 13, 2019)
– Mrs. M’s Hooked on Books is planning a summer kick-off event on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at the corner of Dock St. and Foundry St. in Millville, N.J. from 11: 00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and sponsored by New jersey Motorsports Park
“This one particular day, I set them out in a box by the pole and a few kids ran up and they saw the sign ‘free books’ and they were looking through it excited, and this one particular young man found one and was jumping up and down saying ‘A book, a book! My very own book. I’ve always wanted a book.’ My husband and I, just looked at each other like ‘what?’ We didn’t realize that children didn’t just want to play video games, they want to read books,” said McFarland, founder of Mrs, M’s Hooked on Books.
Leading up to the summer kick-off event volunteers and sponsors have been collecting gently used books. Together there will be over 1,000 books given away at the event. Additionally poster, writing and coloring contests were coordinated throughout the City’s schools. The winners of each contest will be announced Saturday.
Mrs. M’s Hooked on Books believes that literacy is one of the greatest gifts in life that any parent can give a child. During this event, there will be literacy for adults as well, so that both the parents and the children can bond through reading and writing.

Mrs. M’s Hooked on Books started out in late 2015, early 2016 by Judy McFarland in which she has been altruistically giving out books on her front porch to the children in the Millville community throughout the summer to promote literacy for school children throughout the summer and she’s been trying to figure out a way to expand to make it bigger in order to reach more kids. Thankfully, her wish came true as “Taking Back Millville” among other organizations got involved and in the year 2016 a total of 1,800 books were presented into the hands of children from Millville for free instead of it being thrown into a landfill.
