Introduction

The Inaugural Run Ride Walk at New Jersey Motorsports Park, benefitting the Lance Armstrong and South Jersey Healthcare Foundations is a 4-part athletic endeavor for competitors, enthusiasts and families, held August 2, 2008 on the grounds of New Jersey Motorsports Park.  There are four events scheduled on the same day: a 1-mile walk, 5k and 10k foot races, and a 20-mile bike ride, the proceeds of which will benefit two outstanding charities: the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the South Jersey Healthcare Foundation.

The events are designed as a mix of competitive and non-competitive to maximize participation and fun for all who enter. All four events will tour parts of New Jersey Motorsports Park, are part of the inaugural weekend activities at the Park, and are intended to grow in the future as annual events.

NJMP has chosen to donate proceeds from entry fees for the inaugural Run-Ride-Walk event to the Lance Armstrong Foundation and South Jersey Healthcare Foundation.  For more information, please visit http:/www./livestrong.org and http://www.sjhfdn.org/

Detailed Schedule

All events will start early on Saturday morning.  Gates to the facility open at 6:00am, and last-minute registration / event packet pickup is open from 6:15am – 7:30am.  Competitors may line up for the ride, 5k and 10k  starting at 7:45.  The starting gun for the cyclists will go off promptly at 8:00am, for the 5k and 10k events at 8:02am and for the 1-mile fun run at 8:05am.

Competitors, please note that the cycling part of the event will be run on public roadways, and that there will be NO ROAD CLOSURES.  At key turns and intersections along the course, local Police will assist with traffic management, and the course will be plainly marked.  Police will be stationed at their respective intersections strategically, and once the bulk of riders have passed, they will leave their posts.  There will be course sweepers later in the event to assist riders with mechanical problems, but riders are reminded that they are responsible for their own safety on course.

About the Race

Course descriptions
The 5k (3.1 mile) course will circle the interior of NJMP’s 500 acre facility, while the 10k (6.2 mile) course will exit the NJMP facility, run down Buckshutem and Dividing Creek roads and re-enter with room for a sprint to the finish of Thunderbolt Raceway. The 20-mile bike ride will tour the rural backroads of Cumberland County, passing through Dividing Creek, Newport and Cedarville.

Safety / hydration / aid stations
General disclaimer – physical exertion in hot and humid conditions is by nature a stenuous activity.  While NJMP will provide basic medical support and hydration along all the event routes, participants are responsible for their own hydration and safety.  To learn more about the basics of hydration for athletes, visit: http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/hydrationandfluid/a/ProperHydration.htm

5k / 10k – Along the running courses, there will be two hydration stations, at roughly the 3km and 7km marks.  Stations will have Lemon-Lime Gatorade and water on hand for participants.  Runners are strongly encouraged to hydrate adequately before the race begins, given summertime weather conditions in South Jersey.

20 mile cycle – There will be two ‘rest stops’ set up along the 20mile ride course, at the intersections of X and Y  (approximately mile 8) and at the intersection of X and Y (approximately mile 16).  At the aid station, participants will be able to use port-a-johns, drink Gatorade and water, and refill their own water bottles.  Riders are strongly encouraged to carry their own hydration for the event, and use the rest stop as a backup.

Medical support – There will be medical and paramedic support on-site at NJMP during the running events, and on call during the cycling event, provided by South Jersey Healthcare.
